There’s a lot of brass music around at Christmas, but we think no-one does it quite so classily as Onyx. Last Friday they played live on Radio 3 with the BBC Singers and their conductor Ben Parry. The concert of Christmas music old and new, including a couple of solo items from Onyx themselves, is available to “listen again” on the BBC iPlayer until Friday 20th December. On Sunday, they were at the Sheldonian Theatre in Oxford, performing for the City of Oxford Orchestra’s Christmas Concert. The group was back at St. Paul’s Knightsbridge (location of the BBC concert) for a performance with Laudate choir, under Howard Ionascu. Still to come are the Caravan Charity Christmas concert at St. Luke’s Chelsea, and two sets of “Fleet Street Carols” at St. Bride’s Church, where city workers, tourists and anyone else who wants to can just walk up and join in the singing!
Just in time for Christmas, Onyx’s website has also had a white and red overhaul, so please do go and visit www.onyxbrass.co.uk and have a look around. You can listen to tracks from their various CDs, including their Christmas disc, Canite Tuba, a perfect Christmas gift, perhaps.
